Red Dwarf X – UK Air Date Revealed

In what is quite possibly one of the silliest marketing stunts I’ve heard of, Dave, the UK TV channel that have commissioned a whole new series of the space-faring sitcom Red Dwarf, have released the date on which the first new episode will air. Rather than just publishing it on a webpage or sending out a press release, they decided to get fans of the show to “GO #VINDALUNAR” by tweeting a message with that silly hashtag from their special homepage. Each tweet released some helium into a weather balloon, to which was attached Lister’s favourite food and drink – a Vindaloo Curry and a can of Lager. When the balloon was full, it took off for (near) space and revealed the date. So, until Friday, you can watch 102 minutes of a tin foil tray and an aluminium can bob and spin as they float up into the stratosphere, before the balloon pops and they fall back to Earth!

Or I could just tell that it’s the 4th of October.

No word as yet on a US date, but according to a tweet by writer and co-creator Doug Naylor, the feedback from journalists who’ve seen the first new episode “has been fantastic”, so I’m sure it’s just a matter of time. And to get everyone ready for the new series, Dave are starting to re-run all the previous episodes in weekend marathons starting this Sunday. For some bizarre reason, they’re running them in reverse order, so first up is the feature length special version of “Back To Earth”, followed by series 8 and 7 next week. A scheduling ‘Smeg-Up’ perhaps? Either way, I can’t wait for the 4th October.

Samsung to fight Apple's effort to ban sales of its smartphone

Samsung said Tuesday it will "take all necessary measures" to keep its products available for sale in the United States. The statement comes one day after Apple filed a request in federal court for a ban on eight smartphones that Samsung sells.

"We will take all necessary measures to ensure the availability of our products in the U.S. market," the Samsung statement said.

SYMANTEC SYKES ENTERPRISES INORATED

Our (Mostly) Electronics-Free Summer: Final Report

I captured this image from DragonBox+. My son now knows how to manipulate the equation (and ones more complicated than this) to isolate the variable x.

It’s been close to a month since our electronics-free summer period ended, and I have to say, it had positive, lasting effects.

My daughter does the occasional electronic now, but she never did much to begin with. She’ll watch a movie once in a while, or she’ll do something fun on the computer or iPad, but usually she prefers to do other things.

Image: Microsoft’s Kodu

Once August arrived, my son spent a day or two almost completely plugged in, but the novelty wore off pretty quickly. Now, four weeks later, he’ll watch a movie, or get into a game on the iPad, but more often he sits for long periods playing with Bucky Balls, making up plays and performances with his sister, playing board games, or reading books for hours. We’ve started the year’s homeschool, though, so that helps keep him occupied in other ways. But when my son does do something electronic, it’s usually watching a worthwhile movie, experimenting with computer programming with Kodu, or playing very educational iPad apps like DragonBox+. So he is plugged in some of the time, but he’s learning about popular culture, computer programming, or Algebra. Not bad for an eight-year-old.

You can read back through my posts on this experiment:

The Summer My Kids (Almost) Completely Unplugged
Our (Mostly) Electronics-Free Summer: Update #1
Our (Mostly) Electronics-Free Summer: Update #2
Our (Mostly) Electronics-Free Summer: Update #3

But I will also sum up here. The disadvantage of having the kids completely unplugged was not being able to show them something cool that I found on the internet. But that was about it.

The advantages were many. My kids learned how to entertain themselves, hardly ever proclaiming boredom. They learned to deal with the challenge of not having an easy answer for what to do (though the “easy answer” did eventually become reading books, not something I complained about). They spent quality time together. And, there are the lasting effects of now having the tools to have control over and responsibility for their own entertainment.

I doubt we’ll do this every summer, but I’m sure we’ll do a week here and there of no-electronic time. It’s good for them to be reminded about how much else there is to do in the world.

Whether you do this for a weekend, a week, a month, or longer, I highly recommend unplugging your kids for a period of time, especially if they are the type, like my son, to really lose themselves in a screen. An extended period of time without relying on that kind of immediate gratification and entertainment forces them to be self-reliant and take responsibility for occupying their free time.

Harvard scientists grow human cells onto nanowire scaffold to form 'cyborg' skin

DNP Artificial skin

Growing human tissue is old hat, but being able to measure activity inside flesh is harder -- any electrical probing tends to damage the cells. But a new breakthrough from Harvard researchers has produced the first "cyborg" tissue, created by embedding functional, biocompatible nanowires into lab-grown flesh. In a process similar to making microchips, the wires and a surrounding organic mesh are etched onto a substrate, which is then dissolved, leaving a flexible mesh. Groups of those meshes are formed into a 3D shape, then seeded with cell cultures, which grow to fill in the lattice to create the final system. Scientists were able to detect signals from heart and nerve cell electro-flesh made this way, allowing them to measure changes in response to certain drugs. In the near-term, that could allow pharmaceutical researchers to better study drug interaction, and one day such tissue might be implanted in a live person, allowing treatment or diagnosis. So, would that make you a cyborg or just bionic? We'll let others sort that one out.

Nokia's Windows Phones: The Games Begin

Last week Nokia unveiled a pair of Windows Phone devices, the Lumia 710 and 800. They'll arrive in the United States sometime in early 2012, according to the Finnish manufacturer.

"Lumia is the first real Windows Phone," Nokia CEO Stephen Elop told the audience during a London keynote Oct. 26. "We are signaling our intent right now to be today's leaders in smartphone design and craftsmanship, no question about it."

Let the games begin.

The Lumia 800 represents the high end of Nokia's smartphone plans, and features a 1.4GHz processor, hardware acceleration and graphics processor, and an 8-megapixel camera that uses Carl Zeiss optics. Design-wise, there's a 3.7-inch active-matrix organic LED (AMOLED) ClearBlack curved display integrated into a body rendered from a single piece of polycarbonate. I played with it during a Nokia presentation last week in New York City; it's pretty.

In a play toward the midmarket, Nokia is also offering the cheaper Lumia 710, also with a 1.4GHz processor, and a 5-megapixel camera. It's pretty, too.

To say that Nokia needs both these devices to succeed is something of an understatement, considering how it's abandoned its other operating systems in favor of Windows Phone. In order to sweeten the deal for consumers, Nokia has installed some exclusive apps with its phones, including Nokia Drive (with turn-by-turn navigation and voice-activated control) and Nokia Maps, which offers up points of interest around the user's location.

As I mentioned in an earlier posting, Microsoft wants to push Windows Phone more toward the midmarket, and the Lumia 710 seems a big step in that direction. "We are dramatically broadening the set of price points in Mango-related phones that we can reach," Andy Lees, president of Microsoft's Windows Phone division, told the audience during the Asia D conference Oct. 19. "That's particularly important because going lower down in price point opens up more addressable market."

But it'll still be some months until we know whether Nokia's succeeding in its all-or-nothing effort.

Puzzle me this!: GeekDad Puzzle of the Week: Slightly Salacious Birds

A pair of blue-footed boobies. Image: Flickr/chany14

Did you think the blue-footed booby was the only bird with a colorful and slightly off-color name? Think again. Imagine there are red-breasted, green-faced, orange-elbowed, puce-shouldered and mauve-pantsed birds, named bush-tits, lordcocks, shags, foliage-gleaners, and tremblers. Some are more common than others. Use the following clues to discover a bird’s full name and its rarity.

1. The puce-shouldered bird is the most common and is either a shag or a lordcock.

2. Neither the lordcock nor the green-faced foliage-gleaner nor the bush-tit is the rarest bird.

3. The bush-tit and the lordcock are mauve-pantsed and orange-elbowed, though perhaps not in that order.

4. The mauve-pantsed bird is more common than the bush-tit and both are more common than the green-faced bird.

If you’ve paired colored parts with names and rarities by Friday afternoon, submit your answer to GeekDad Central to qualify for the random drawing of a $50 ThinkGeek gift certificate — good luck!

Logitech teases new Ultimate Ears lineup, says it's bringing 'Power to the Music' on August 29th

Having most recently introduced products like its water-friendly K310 washable keyboard and that TV Cam HD, Logitech's now apparently prepping a fresh Ultimate Ears portfolio for all sound lovers out there. Via its UE page on Zuck's social network, the company's teasing a plethora of products with some rather suppressive shots that don't quite tell us what's on the other end, though we can slightly see new headphones and speakers will be the focus of the main 'Power to the Music' event in a couple of days -- or August 29th, to be exact. For now, it looks like we'll have to keep wondering, but you can get a better hint for what to expect by tapping on the Facebook link below.

Apple, Samsung respond to the jury's decision; September 20th court date set for injunction hearing

Apple, Samsung respond to the jury's decision September 20th court date set for injunction hearing

Well. The verdict for the tech industry patent trial of the week is in, and the jury agreed with Apple's version of the events enough to award it a billion dollars and change in damages while awarding Samsung... nothing. Naturally, the two companies differ in their viewpoints on this ruling, with Apple celebrating a decision that supports its originality and innovation, and is "sending a loud and clear message that stealing isn't right." Samsung, on the other hand, claims it's all about standing up for the consumer, who it believes will be the true victim here, forced to pay more for fewer choices and less innovation now that one company has "a monopoly over rectangles with rounded corners."

Before we get to the inevitable appeals, Apple is seeking a preliminary injunction against Samsung's infringing products and Judge Lucy Koh has set September 20th as a date for the hearing. Apple has until the 29th to file its motion, which Samsung will have 14 days to respond to, before Apple has two days to craft a response of its own. While we all take a breather before the lawyers get back at it, you'll find the statements from both companies after the break.

Update: As expected, Samsung has indicated it will appeal the ruling. Wall Street Journal's Evan Ramstad tweets that it plans to file post-verdict motions to overturn the decision and if those are unsuccessful, it will take its case to the Appeals Court.

AllThingsD: 'iPad Mini' to get its own event in October after new iPhone reveal

After refreshing its computer range, Apple's gearing up for two events for its new phone and tablet hardware, according to sources at AllThingsD. Given the excitement welling up behind its next iPhone, many have noted (including Daring Fireball's John Gruber) that it would make a whole lot of sense to furnish both the phone and the heavily rumored smaller tablet with individual events -- and that is, apparently, what's going to happen. Unfortunately, the anonymous sources weren't revealing anything further -- Apple's yet to confirm that posited September 12th event date, let alone any secondary event. But when it does, be assured that we'll be there to cover both of them.
