Puzzle me this!: GeekDad Puzzle of the Week: Slightly Salacious Birds

A pair of blue-footed boobies. Image: Flickr/chany14

Did you think the blue-footed booby was the only bird with a colorful and slightly off-color name? Think again. Imagine there are red-breasted, green-faced, orange-elbowed, puce-shouldered and mauve-pantsed birds, named bush-tits, lordcocks, shags, foliage-gleaners, and tremblers. Some are more common than others. Use the following clues to discover a bird’s full name and its rarity.

1. The puce-shouldered bird is the most common and is either a shag or a lordcock.

2. Neither the lordcock nor the green-faced foliage-gleaner nor the bush-tit is the rarest bird.

3. The bush-tit and the lordcock are mauve-pantsed and orange-elbowed, though perhaps not in that order.

4. The mauve-pantsed bird is more common than the bush-tit and both are more common than the green-faced bird.

If you’ve paired colored parts with names and rarities by Friday afternoon, submit your answer to GeekDad Central to qualify for the random drawing of a $50 ThinkGeek gift certificate — good luck!
